Ebb & Flow (& Glow)

Presented as part of Naanzhe: Water is Colour.

Co.Lab Gallery, Thunder Bay, Ontario. November 2022.

After  11 years of having migrated to Canada, Daniel is interested in exploring the flux of how immigrants feel about their migration process. As time passes, his own feelings towards his migration have been in constant change - positive, negative, neutral, positive again. It’s an unpredictable journey. This project explores the feelings of Daniel’s family members and friends about their own migration experience; even when the migration was made by their parents.

These images were soaked in Malta, a sugary, non-alcoholic malt beverage popular in Venezuela, the artist's country of origin. The soaking process leaves no trace of the drink's brown hue; instead, colourful streaks emerge across the surface of the images. This transformation — entirely unlike its source — mirrors the migrant experience: an evolution that often bears little resemblance to where it began.
